Joint Liaison Group Office

1. The Joint Liaison Group (JLG) is the main forum for our continuing discussions with the Chinese on the many matters concerning the future of Hong Kong which need to be resolved before 1997. Initial we may need to reinforce the office at an early stage. reinforcement would probably be made by bringing in a secondee from the Hong Kong Government, at first secretary level.

Administrative support for the new office will be provided by the British Trade Commission which is already responsible for the administration of all DS posts in Hong Kong. The BTC consider that they will need reinforcements to cope with the extra work, at least in the short term during the months preceding the opening of the office and its initial phase. PPD have agreed to provide temporary support at the level required (DS9) for a period of 6-9 months.
