VISIT TO HONG KONG BY WIFE OF JI PENGFEI
میں
말이
Madam Xu Hanbing, wife of Ji Pengfei, visited Hong Kong for a private visit at the invitation of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce from
6 to 14 June. She had apparently been disappointed that she had not been able to accompany her husband in 1985.
We gave a dinner for her on 8 June and Anne Shepherd and I attended a return dinner given by the NCNA on 12 June. Very little of substance came out of these occasions. Madam Xu was amiable but disinclined to discuss business. She seems to be enjoying her work as Vice Chairman of the People's Institute of Foreign Affairs which takes her around the world and gives her an opportunity to meet a variety of people.
me,
The only point which she did make which struck in a general discussion on Sino Soviet relations, was that before Zhao Ziyang visited Eastern Europe on his latest tour the Russians asked that he should take in Moscow as well. Madam Xu said that the Chinese had refused in order to emphasise the difference in relations with the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. This may be common knowledge but I had not heard it before.
