(A) Brief in the FCO vis a vis HK and China.
Line to Take: As FCO Minister of State responsible for Far East, brief covers all aspects of Britain's relations with China. addition I take a particular interest in HK because of its
In position as a British Dependent Territory. Keep in close touch with Governor over HK affairs. Secretary of State also takes a close interest.
(B) Purpose of visit.
Line to Take: Took office in June as FCO Minister of State with special responsibility for HK, Regard it as essential that I should visit territory as early as I can to brief myself fully on current HK issues and meet those involved in running territory.
(C) Link between visit and planned visit to Peking by Governor of

HK.
Line to Take:
No link, though visit is useful opportunity to discuss with the Governor his plans for his Peking trip.
Visit a reflection of the need felt in London to monitor developments in HK closely in the run-up to 1997.
Line to Take: Hope to have many chances to re-visit HK in the future. Do of course follow HK developments closely from London, but always helpful to see things at first hand.
(E) Possible query on background and attributes brought to job,
concern over frequent changes of minister, and plans to visit China.
