For Mr Renton to pay his first visit to Japan as Minister responsible for Anglo- Japanese relations.

Mr Renton has yet to visit Japan a visit planned in the Spring of this year did not come about. It would seem sensible to plan for a visit, following up after a suitable interval that of the Secretary of State in May, to monitor progress and maintain pressure on the Japanese in relation to our trade concerns, as well as to maintain the momentum of the excellent political relationship.

For logistic reasons, it would be ideal to combine this with a visit to China (see separate pro-forma). The Christmas recess would provide sufficient time for this, and distance the visit well from the Secretary of State's later this month.
