Mr Renton did not visit Japan, despite plans for him to do so. It is important that the Minister should gain first-hand experience of as important a country as Japan.

A visit at a suitable interval after that of the Secretary of State would help to maintain pressure on economic and trade matters and the momentum of our political relationship
