LORD GLENARTHUR'S TRAVEL 1987

1.

Your minute of 27 July.

2. I understand that Lord Glenarthur has discussed his Hong Kong visit with the Governor. Sir David Wilson has put an outline programme to Hong Kong for comments with a view to submitting firm proposals to the Minister of State before his departure on leave. "First reading" briefs will be submitted on 4 September and the final versions a week later.

3. Mr Adams is asking posts in Manila and Jakarta to contact host governments about the visits to the Philippines and Indonesia and is inviting them to propose outline

programmes.

4. I have discussed the question of who might accompany Lord Glenarthur on his three journeys with Mr Gillmore. The Minister has, I think, agreed that I should go with him to Hong Kong, Manila and Jakarta. I should also like to accompany the Minister on the South Pacific trip but my availability will depend on developments over Hong Kong. The obvious alternative is Mr Furness. Mr Gillmore would in principle be happy to go on the Sub-Continent trip. Mr Burns might do so otherwise. (I shall have to go to Hong Kong and Peking for JLG VIII in November which effectively rules me out.)
