In 1986 there were 1,176 factories in the SSEZ,

workforce of 130,000. The industrial output value was

KMB 3.5 bn. This is expected to reach RMB 5 br in

1987. The major industries are electronics, textiles,

building materials, machinery, pharmaceuticals and food

processing.

In the "Seventh Five-Year Plan", the aim is to improve

the product mix and the flexibility of industry, and to

move to more sophisticated production. The industrial

output value of the SSEZ is projected to reach KMB 8 bn

by 1990, 60% of which is expected to be exported.

At the end of 1986 the electricity generation capacity. installed in Guangdong was 4,650 megawatts (MW), 2,050 MW being thermal power and 2,600 MW being hydro-power.

An addition of 3,000 MW is expected by 1990, due to the

completion of the Shajiao Plant A (1,200 MW) and Plant B

(700 MW), and the expansion of the Huangpu Power Plant

(600 MW) and hydro-power (500 Mk).

In the 1990s there would be additional sources of energy

supply, from natural gas, pump storage, and the Daya Bay

Nuclear Plant. The possibility of using oil shale for

generating electricity would also be stucied.

Strategic Planning

6.2.1 Guangdong is implementing the national policy of controlling the size of large cities, and promoting the

industrial development of smaller cities and towns. The

agricultural work force is likely to decline and the

industrial work force is likely to spread out fairly

uniformly. This implies that the population will be

well distributed awong ર large number of urban

development centres.
