Dr. Y.L. Choi (Government Engineer/Optimisation Studies,

Lands and Works Brarch,

Brarch, Hong Kong) referred to the

earlier presentation by Shenzhen officials on

the port

facilities that at present there were 4 berths capable

of handling vessels up to 10,000 tonnes. He understood

that in Huangpu port the tidal range in the estuary

permitted some 22 vessels up to 10,000 tonnes to sail to

Guangzhou tvo times 2 dav ir. each direction. Re

enquired whether dredging of the navigation channel in

the estuary would be required and whether the work would

place a constraint on the total capacity of the ports

alorg this navigation channel.

Vice-Mayor Zhang said that there were not many ocean

going vessels over 10,000 tonnes berthing at Guangzhou.

He added that dredging of the channel

near Chi Kar

would be required. However, this was not a problem at

present.

4.3.0 Sir David added that the Hong Kong delegates had earlier

discussed with the huangpu Port Authority on the

question of dredging of the seaway to the west of Lantau

Island. [It was later confirmed during the visit to the

Port Authority of Chi Pan that the siltatior rate there

was about 30 cm/year and dredging was needed once every 3 years.]

Road

4.3.7

Mr. Sun Zhen (Director of the Office of Transportation

and Communicatior) said that the expected completion of

the Luo-Sha Tunnel (Wutong Hills Tunnel) by the end of

this year would improve the cross-border road traffic in

the eastern side of the SSEZ. He enquired whether there

were road works in Hong Kong that would match with the

completion of the tunnel.
