Summary Record of Meeting between the Political Adviser and

Vice Governor of Guangdong Province in Canton on 27 March,

1987, at 9.30 a.m.

Mr Yang welcomed Mr Clift to Guangzhou so soon after

taking up his new post. He had met his predecessor twice and

believed that their good relations would continue. Mr Clift

expressed his pleasure that the cooperation which already

existed between the two sides was so good. He passed on warm

greetings from Mr Boyd.

Mr Yang said that since 1979 when China had adopted

the open-door policy and introduced the concept of Special

ncept

Economic Zones, the economic relations between Hong Kong and

Guangdong had grown rapidly. He invited Mr Clift to have a

good look at the city which he understood Mr Clift had not seen

for 10 years.

Mr Clift confirmed that he had last visited

Guangzhou in 1976. He was looking forward to seeing the

changes.
