Mr. Fu said that the control of illegal immigration had always been an important task because like any other

illegal act, it harmed Hong Kong's prosperity and stability and affected the friendship between the two sides. During the past few years, experience showed that the figures went up and

down. Sometimes when the Chinese reduced their control those

involved in illegal activities took advantage. Some were very well acquainted with the control measures. Basically two main measures were adopted: education at the grassroots level and

patrols along the border. The information sent to NCNA on

illegal immigrants had already been sent to the relevant

authorities. Experience showed that when the weather was

warmer there were more illegal immigrants. Mr. Fu requested further information on where the illegal immigrants were crossing the border into Hong Kong. Mr. Clift agreed to provide such information and thanked Mr. Fu for his helpful and positive approach.
