Contacts with Macau and Portuguese Authorities

At lunch in Peking on 7 May I mentioned to

Ambassador Ke Zaishuo that we had been approached

by the Macau authorities with a request for a meeting

to discuss Hong Kong's experience in certain fields

e.g. pensions. This obviously flowed from their agreement with China. We intended to provide the

Macau Government with factual information. Thee

might well be further practical contacts of this

sort over the coming months and years. I wanted

to be sure that the Chinese knew about this so that

they would realise that we were not ganging up with

the Portuguese against them. Ke Zaishuo expressed understanding.
