Portugues priorities quite different from

1. In an interview published last weekend in Lisbon's main daily newspaper, the new Governor of Macau, Carlos Melancia, said one of the key features of his future activities as Governor would be the promotion of the Portuguese language in the territory. Melancia also referred to the importance of Portuguese businessmen to the future of Macau. He called for a more dynamic approach to the business opportunities offered through the agreement with China.

2. Melancia said he would be supervising directly the management of the media in Macau. This would be to stimulate a positive image of Portugal, aimed at attracting Portuguese investment.

3. In a ceremony on Friday of last week, the two new Assistant Secretaries to the Governor, Galhardo Simões and Rocha Cabral, were sworn in by the President of the Republic. This was conducted at a somewhat higher level and in a higher profile than might have been expected in the past.
