Tong Yuk-hon of Ta Kung Pao said that as MK and Macau were Chinese territories, there were no reasons for these two places to be administered by foreign countries for long. However, these two places could be the bridge linking China with Britain, Portugal and other countries. The paper said that the changes to HK and Macau were in the interests of China and other countries that enjoyed friendly relationship with China.

Sing Tao Jih Pao said that Macau still faced many difficulties ahead, such as how to groom locals to realise the "Macau people ruling Macau" plan.

The Express said that the Sino-Portuguese agreement was modelled on the Sino-British agreement and that both China and Portugal had worked out the agreement in line with the situation in Macau and in Portugal. The paper said that whether gambling would continue after

1999 awaited China's confirmation.

The SCM Post said if HK and Macau in reality received the good deal they have been promised on paper, that should substantially allay Taiwan's suspicions. That there would be a sounder framework for the natural desire of all Chinese to be united. The Standard said the Joint Agreement failed to dispel doubts on the nationality issue. In another commentary, the Standard said the successful conclusion of Macau's return to China would not only push China's propaganda on Taiwan to a new plane, but it would also raise the aspirations of many Taiwan people for an earlier reunification.
