Drew Dish,
MACAO
While I was in Macao yesterday two of my regular contacts mentioned that the evening institutes were under very heavy pressure from an extra- ordinary number of people wanting to learn Portuguese. The students are local people and it seems that most of them are anxious to fulfil the language qualification needed for a Portuguese passport. The authorities accept applications for passports from people who have lived in Macao for five years and who have a (fairly basic) knowledge of the Portuguese language, history and culture. Until now the Portuguese language has not been a high priority for the local people.
2. It is said that so far there are about 50,000 people in Macao with Portuguese passports. Some of these passports were issued in Lisbon but most have been issued in Macao. I am told that the Lisbon passports give unrestricted right of abode in Portugal (and many of the holders believe, the rest of the European Community countries) but those issued in Macao allow a six-month stay that can be renewed after a one-day absence.
