Contacts with China : The Changing Scene

A little vignette which demonstrates in a

remarkable way the changing nature of our contacts with China.

Last week, when having dinner with XU Jiatun of the NCNA, I was told by one of the NCNA staff that SONG Zhiguang, previously Ambassador in London and later Assistant to the Foreign Minister dealing with European (and Hong Kong) affairs before going to Tokyo as Ambassador, was in Hong Kong visiting relatives. I asked him to come for a cup of coffee.

SONG Zhiguang was born in Hong Kong. His sister still lives here. The father of his second wife (his first wife died a few years ago) is a surgeon in Hong Kong. She also has a brother here. The SONGS were spending 10 days here visiting relatives and now come. regularly.

SONG brought with him a booklet of photographs. They had been taken the previous Saturday by YANG Shaoming (son of YANG Shankun) at a Scout Rally where I had been taking the salute. I met the young YANG
