Threatened expulsions from the Party. It was reported that leading reformist intellectuals, Su Shaozhi, Wang Ruoshui and Wu Zuguang had been threatened with expulsion from the Party if they did not resign first.

Preparations for the 13th Party Congress. A Xinhua report outlined the main work of the Congress: introduction of younger people into the Central Committee, Secretariat, Politburo and Politburo Standing Committee; formulation of a blueprint for reform of the political structure, based on a speech made by Deng Xiaoping in 1980, "On the reform of the Party and State leadership"; and a discussion and definition of the fundamental principles of future economic reform and a review of progress to date.
