Long Term

1. To ensure that Chinese awareness of Britain is maintained at an appropriate level in political, commercial, press and cultural circles.

2. Through dissemination of COI material, and through the sponsored visits programme, to promote the United Kingdom's image as a reliable trading partner and source of scientific and technological expertise.

3. To cultivate an awareness of British values, culture and institutions among influential Chinese individuals and among young people so as to increase understanding of, and interest in, Britain and British policies.

Short Term

4.

To improve the rate of acceptance of COI Category I invitations.

5. To increase awareness of Britain in the provinces by careful targetting of Category 2 and 3 visit invitations and of COI information material.

6. To develop relations with the increased number of Chinese publications to which we distribute information material and to encourage them to use a wider range of materials.

Consular

Long Term

1. To ensure that the Chinese authorities give us timely notification of consular cases, even when they occur in remote areas.

Short Term

2. To develop a more reliable computer system and appropriate training for staff.

3. To reorganise procedures in the visa section following the

increase in staff recommended by the Inspectors.

To reorganise the layout of visa section to be able to deal with the increasing numbers of applications more efficiently.
