THE DEPARTURE OF THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR

1.

The Secretary of State and Lady Howe have accepted an invitation to the farewell party hosted by the Chinese Ambassador, Mr Hu Dingyi, and his wife on 24 June. The Secretary of State and Lady Howe have also agreed to host a farewell dinner party for Mr Hu and his wife on 25 June.

I submit points to make, that could be used on either occasion. I also attach personality notes on the Ambassador and his wife, together with a copy of the record of Mr Hu's call on the Prime Minister on 19 June.

2. The Chinese Ambassador has made farewell calls on officials, and Mr Gillmore and Mr McLaren have been briefed to cover bilateral and regional issues. The Secretary of State may therefore wish to discuss wider international issues and to follow up Mr Hu Dingyi's rather unsatisfactory denial to the Prime Minister about Chinese supply of Silkworm missiles to Iran.

3. I also submit draft notes for a short speech at the Secretary of State's dinner party.
