Consulates

To cope with this ever expanding activity you opened

a Consulate in Manchester in 1986, just as we opened a

Consulate-General in Shanghai in 1985.

There is still more that can be done, plenty for your

successor to do.

Thanks

[But before you go, I want to thank you and your wife for all that you have done to build links between our two

countries. Madame Xie has been tireless in her efforts

to twin towns. One she must be particularly pleased with

is the twinning of Leicester with your own birth city,

Chongqing.

It is now, however, my sad duty to bid you farewell

and let you return to your home province, Sichuan. We

have done our best to make you feel at home. I

understand "The Sichuan dog barks at the sun", is a

proverb testifying to unpredictable weather there.

hope therefore you have at least felt at home in our

weather of the last few weeks].

Toast.
