SUBJECT:

CHINA

During a recent talk with our Ambassador in Peking,

Sir Geoffrey Howe was struck by the extent of our

current dealings with China. He thought that the

Prime Minister and other colleagues might be

interested in the enclosed snapshot paper which sets

out the progress made towards meeting our policy

objectives towards China.

The rapid expansion of our contacts with China puts

pressure on the limited resources available in our

Embassy in Peking and means the co-ordination is

especially important. He hopes therefore Cabinet

Colleagues will ensure that their Departments keep

the Foreign Office informed, as their links with

China develop.
