Two infrastructural developments in the

Pearl River Delta region are also worthy of note.

First, with the commissioning of the first unit of

Shajiao Power Plant B in Dongguan, 350 Mw of

electricity generating capacity has now been added to the Pearl River Delta region. The second event, which was given great publicity, was the

ground-breaking ceremony in connection with the 302-kilometre Guangzhou-Shenzhen superhighway. As

planned, the superhighway will service the Pearl

River estuary, linking Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen,

Panyu, Zhuhai and other counties and cities by 1997.

The section between Shenzhen and the eastern suburbs

of Guangzhou will be constructed first and is planned

to be completed in 1990. Travel time between

Guangzhou and Shenzhen should then be reduced to one

hour. However, doubts remain as to how much of the finance for this project has been firmly committed

and to whether its timetable could be adhered to.

Visible trade between Hong Kong and China

(all growth rates being expressed in money terms)

20.

China remained Hong Kong's largest trading partner in the first quarter of 1987. Total visible

trade between Hong Kong and China, at

HK$40,533 million (US$5,197 million) in the first quarter, increased by 54% over the same quarter in

1986.
