SUBJECT:

In Confidence

I was most sad to learn that you will shortly be leaving

Britain on the termination of your appointment as

Ambassador. The frequent occasions on which we have met,

in the context of the close relations between our

countries and the large number of high-level visits in

each direction, have given me the opportunity to

establish a personal relationship which I have much

enjoyed and which I shall greatly miss.

Enclosures flag(s)

Before you leave London, I should very much like the

opportunity to arrange a small dinner party to bid you

and your wife farewell. However, as I am sure you will

realise, the demands on my timetable do not permit such

pleasant recreation before 11 June. I have therefore set

aside the date of Thursday 25 June, which I hope you

might also be able to reserve. At the moment, however, I

am unable to issue any formal invitations in advance of

the General Election.
