The habit of certain Chinese intellectuals to go on lecture tours of various universities practising, in the words of their critics, 'demagogy' seems to have been particularly offensive to the authorities. The spoken word seems at times to be considered as even more dangerous than the written word, though of course there appears to have been no lack of stooges or spies avidly taking down each insulting word or phrase.
