1.

Group Tours Review Meeting. Wu Yi Shan, 4 March

-

We agreed that the two tour companies China Travel

Service and Guangdong Tours should have between them an extra

two tours per day to Hong Kong, on top of the existing five

tours per day. The increase would be introduced in phases.

From 18 March they would have an extra forty-five per month,

and the remaining fifteen per month from September.

2.

We agreed that the maximum number of persons on each

tour should be raised from thirty-six to thirty-eight.

3.

The Chinese agreed not to ask for another increase

until the end of 1988.

4.

We agreed that, for arrivals by sea, in future up to

two tour groups could arrive on one vessel. We have previously

limited this to one per vessel.

5.

We declined to allow groups to use the through train

service (inadequate facilities, and no room to expand at Hung

Hom).

6.

Ji asked for a little more flexibility from our side

over visa extensions in humanitarian cases. We said that we

were ready to look at any such case ad hoc; there could be no

blanket arrangement.

7.

Ji raised two matters unconnected with group tours,

without giving prior notice:

Immigration Department had recently started stamping the travel documents of Taiwanese

travellers going through Lo Wu. This departure
