Economic

CONFIDENTIAL

The development of the Chinese economy and of our

trading relationship in such a way that Chinese

credit-worthiness is sustained and the growth of Chinese

exports does not damage sectors of British industry.

V.

Residents/Tourists

There are 620 British Residents registered with the

Embassy. The continuing rise in the number of visiting

businessmen and tourists, and the posting of more

skilled technical personnel to China as project business

develops, will increase the demand for consular and

commercial services from our Embassy and

Consulate-General.

SECTION III:

I.

CHINESE INTERESTS IN THE UK

Economic

China will continue to look partly to Western Europe,

including the UK, as a source for training expertise,

technology and equipment (including defence equipment)

and as an outlet for its exports. The Chinese have

lobbied for the removal of China from the COCOM list.

II.

Language

The Chinese will value British help with English

language training, partly as a means of access to

science and technology and to facilitate a better under-

standing of international trade and organisations.
