MR JOHN MADDOX

Mr John Maddox is Editor of "Nature", the influential monthly journal which is widely read both among scientists and the general public interested in science. He was a Lecturer in Theoretical Physics at Manchester University for some years before he became Science Correspondent of "The Guardian" newspaper. He first became Editor of "Nature" in 1966, but for five years from 1975, was Director of The Nuffield Foundation which supports scientific, medical and social research and the advancement of education. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, 1976-81. The wide range of his knowledge is demonstrated by the titles of the books he has co-authored, "The Spread of Nuclear Weapons", "Revolution in Biology", "The Doomsday Syndrome" and "Beyond the Energy Crisis".

MR AUSTIN MITCHELL MP

Austin Mitchell has been a Labour Member of Parliament since 1977

when he won a by-election for the Grimsby seat. He graduated in Politics and History from Manchester University and taught in universities in New Zealand from 1959-67, and at Oxford University from 1967-69. He then moved into television journalism and worked for Yorkshire Television for six years before going into politics. He has written many books on a variety of subjects, recent titles being "Westminster Man", "The Case for Labour" and "Four Years in the Death of the Labour Party". He frequently appears on radio and television as well as writing for the press as a political

commentator.

MR JOHN RADCLIFFE

John Radcliffe is Head of the BBC Open University Production Centre. He started his career in the BBC External Services in 1961 and has worked in Schools Television and Continuing Education Television where he was responsible for the ambitious and highly successful BBC Computer Literacy Project, 1980-84. The Open University Production Centre is responsible for Baking 200 television and 300 radio programmes a year for the Open University. The Centre also undertakes production work for other national agencies and does a considerable amount of training for overseas educational broadcasts. Courses have been run abroad, including China. John Radcliffe has travelled abroad many times for the British Council as a lecturer and consultant on educational broadcasting, computer education and distance learning.
