Statistics on cargo movements by land are obtained from the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics, published by the Census & Statistics Department.

Statistics on cargo movements by sea: from the Marine Statistics prepared by the Marine Department (1981 and 1982), and from the Shipping, Port and Cargo Statistics prepared by the Census & Statistics Department (1983 to 1985). For the direct inward and outward cargo movements, statistics for 1981 and 1982 are not strictly comparable with those for 1983 to 1985 due to difference in source. However, the difference is not large enough to distort the calculation of the growth rates. As for transhipment cargo, compatible statistics for 1981 and 1982 are not available.
