CHINA YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT

Secretary of State is attending the inaugural performance of the China Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Guildhall on 12 February. I attach a copy of Peking telno 29 giving background details on the Orchestra.
2. The Chinese Ambassador is also likely to be present. There are no particular points which we would wish Secretary of State to raise, though he may wish to express continuing interest in China's political situation. We might ask whether Zhao Ziyang is likely to be confirmed as General Secretary of the Party, and if so, who the Ambassador thinks will replace him as Premier, and when (there will be a full meeting of the National People's Congress at the end of March which might announce a successor for Zhao).
