Public Meeting in Support of the Democracy

in China Campaign

China

Your tel. no.

55.

The demonstration duly took place on 12 January. It was poorly attended and press coverage was slight.

I did not, as you suggested, inform NCNA in advance. On balance I thought that we should avoid doing this unless we had good reason to expect serious trouble or embarrassment, for fear of setting a precedent for tipping them off about any public meetings that might affect their interests in some way.

As I later discovered, the organizers had in fact invited NCNA to join in, even to provide a speaker. NCNA did not reply.
