Hong Kong's imports from China have been increasing rapidly since the fourth quarter of 1985.
the third quarter of 1986, the value of such imports, at
HK$21,774 million, was 44% higher than in the same quarter
in 1985. For the first three quarters as a whole, the
increase was 39%. Part of this increase was due to the rapid growth in re-exports of China origin, which increased by 56% in money terms in the third quarter.
Another contributory factor was the increase in compensation trade and outward processing arrangements.
