The main object of the Bill is to amend the principal Ordinance to introduce the term "right of abode in Hong Kong" and to accord that right to a new category of people called "Hong Kong permanent residents", defined to include now "Hong Kong belongers" or The Bill is complementary to Persons (Amendment) Bill 1987, come into force on 1 July 1987.

amendments to the interpretation
Ordinance.
These include
(a)
inserting a
new term "Hong Kong
permanent resident" and defining it by referring to the new First Schedule (clause 27). The new

not have that right;

removing certain references to January 1983 which were originally introduced prior to that date but are no longer needed in that form with commencement of the British Nationality Act 1981;
the
revising the definition of "resident United Kingdom belonger" to make it clear that such
such status must have been obtained prior to 1 January 1983 as after that date the relevant status is that of a "resident British citizen". Introducing a minor amendment to the definition of "United Kingdom belonger" the existing anomaly regarding wives and children of persons who were citizens of the United Kingdom
