Question No. 7

the Hon D G Jeaffreson, CBE, JP, Secretary for Security to a question from the Hon WONG Po-yan, OBE, JP in the Legislative Council on Wednesday, 8 April 1987

Question:

In view of the recent incidents of robbery which have taken place at the Landmark in Central and Regent Arcade in Kowloon, will Government inform this Council whether adequate police presence has been provided in each vicinity and what measures have been, or will be, taken with a view to strengthening the security measures adopted by shopowners in these areas?

Reply :

Sir,

Mr WONG Po-yan is referring to feur jewellery shop robberies which took place within the last six weeks, two in the Landmark, and two in the Regent

bout why the the Hemming Cutie Arcade. The robberies in the Regent Arcade occurred simultaneously in adjacent premises as part of a single incident. In each case the robbers were masked and

either armed or carrying pistol-like objects. jewellery and watches worth almost $10 million were

stolen. So far, the Police have made no arrests.

In total,

In places where there is a strong possibility

that serious crimes could be committed, the Commissioner

of Police provides the best possible coverage with the

men available. In all areas with a concentration of

high-risk premises, policemen patrolling in uniform are supported by officers in plain clothes and by special

high-risk area patrols. There are also frequent visits

by mobile units. The Commissioner is satisfied that

where the robberies in question occurred, Police

coverage was at an appropriate level.
