Turning now to cultural activities, I share the

views of Messrs. Cheong-Leen, Sohmen, Wong Po-yan and

SC Yeung Po-kwan that with the increasing numbers of theatres

and concert halls coming on stream, we should now turn our

attention to providing greater support for the development of local talent and performing companies. The Academy for

the Performing Arts is playing an important role in the

training of professional artists and the Government's

emphasis is to provide the necessary environment for the

artistic potential of our community to be fully realised.

A proposal is being discussed which envisages

the establishment of a liaison committee among the Council

for the Performing Arts, the Urban Council and the Regional

Subject to the agreement of these founcils, this

Council.

the Government and the two municipal councils and, through

the interchange of information and ideas, allow the develop-

ment of a more co-ordinated approach to the provision of

support
