Supplementary to Question No. 8

in LegCo Meeting on 7.1.87

Mr. TAM (in Cantonese) : Sir, under what circumstances will

the Government consider using to commemorate those occasions

in the form of statutory holidays?

Secretary for Education and Manpower:

Sir, I find it difficult

to envisage any conditions in which the Government would wish to

add to the number of holidays because of the economic cost of

doing so and the fact that we do have to compete with other

neighbouring countries, and any addition to our number of holidays

will tend to put us at a disadvantage.

Mr. HUI (in Cantonese): Sir, I would like to ask the Government

public when it decided on what days were going to be holidays, what

criteria were adopted?

beyri

Secretary for Education and Manpower: Sir, I did try to cover this in my original reply. Basically, they are Chinese festivals or Western festivals or specific events.
