Question No 4
Reply by the Hon. R.G.B. Bridge, OBE, JP, Secretary for Education and Manpower
to a Question from the Hon Mrs Pauline NG, JP in the Legislative Council on 7 January 1987
Question: Will Government inform this Council what is the
existing policy on the provision of sex
education in schools and the progress made SO
far?
Sir,
The present policy, based on the advice of the
Curriculum Development Committee and the Board of
Education, is to encourage schools to introduce sex
education; at primary level, through the subject of Health
Education; and, at secondary level, through various
relevant subjects in the curriculum such as Biology, Human
Biology, Home Economics, Religious Education and Social
Studies; and through talks, seminars or similar
outside the formal curriculum. This approach was endorsed
by school principals at a seminar held in 1985.
