year and provide excellent opportunities for a

largely urban population to enjoy the open

countryside.

Broadcasting

52.

A new statutory Broadcasting Authority,

with responsibility for the regulation of all aspects

of wireless television, was established on

September 1987.

Its functions will later be

extended to cover radio and cable television.

Consultants were also commissioned to study and

report on the technical and economic implications of

introducing a second domestic telecommunications

network, a matter relevant not only to the

introduction of cable television, but also to a wide

range of other telecommunications services. When the

consultants' report has been considered and decisions

taken on its findings, the Hong Kong Government hope

to be in a position, in the second half of 1988, to

invite tenders for a cable television service.
