Mr Renton read with interest your minute of 5 February commenting on Sir R Evans' exchanges with Zhou Nan. He was struck by your reference, echoed by Mr Gillmore in his manuscript comments, to the need to inform the Chinese of our flexibility over the publication date of the White Paper. He thinks we will need to play this card with care and at the right time since flexibility might be seen by some as our giving in to the Chinese.
