BRIEF NO 2

CALL UPON THE SECRETARY OF STATE BY MR LI KA-SHING, 22 JULY 1987

INWARD INVESTMENT LINE TO TAKE

-

The present political and economic sensitivities of Hong Kong make it necessary for HMG to take a low key approach to the promotion of inward investment. Informal contact with potential client companies is both the most effective and least volatile method of promotion.

Line to take if approached by individual businessmen

1. British Governments have welcomed inward investment from any country which brings benefit to the UK economy. Inward investors

are treated equally with British companies.

2.

The United Kingdom has many advantages as a location for expansion:- a sound industrial infrastructure, near self sufficiency in energy, an advanced system of education, reasonable wage rates, skilled labour and access to large and sophisticated markets.

INWARD INVESTMENT

The Department of Trade and Industry's Invest in Britain Bureau, which can be contacted through the British Trade Commission in Hong Kong, is always ready to assist enquiries from inward investors.
