SECRETARY OF STATE'S MEETING WITH MR LI KA-SHING, 22 JULY 1987
I am attaching briefing for this meeting.

Mr Li will be accompanied by Lord Derwent, Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa (Europe) Ltd, and Mr Simon Murray, Group Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. Mr Benjamin and Mr Beston will attend the meeting.
3. Lord Derwent has written to SOS (14 July), giving his reason for requesting the call and providing background on Mr Li.
4. Mr Li is interested in making a major investment in the UK (brief 2).
Other interests of Mr Li which may be the subject of discussion are:

(i) a possible order for NEI from Hong Kong Electric (one of
Mr Li's acquisitions) (brief 3); and
(ii) Hutchison's participation in the proposed development
project of Gordon Wu of Hopewell Holdings for Lantau Island and the Western Harbour, which includes a new Hong Kong airport (brief 4).

in addition to his call on SOS Mr Li is due to meet the Prime Minister (with Lord McAlpine of West Green), Lord Whitelaw, Lord Glenarthur (FCO) and Mr Renton (Home Office).
