Note for the record

Sir Y K Pao

Sir Y K Pao came to see me this afternoon at his request. Not many points of interest. He said that he had recently had dinner with DENG. He had a plan whereby a library would be established in a university in the UK to be called the Deng Xiaoping Library. Similarly at Ningbo University there would be a Margaret Thatcher Library. The UK library plan was being arranged through Sir Geoffrey Howe. DENG Xiaoping had been very pleased at the idea and given consent to the use of his name.

2.

I asked him about the Chartered Bank and the possibility that Mr Holmes a Court might now be forced to sell his shares. Sir Y K said that Holmes a Court was in trouble because of the stock market crash. He had offered to sell Sir Y K his shares but at a very high price. Sir Y K was waiting both for the price to come down and for the Bank of England investigation into the rescue operation of Chartered Bank last year to be completed. This was expected in December.
