A short walk through large crowds from the Legislative Council building brought the Queen and Prince Philip to the striking new headquarters of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank, the territory's biggest bank. Here they were able both to admire the unique structure of this highly-acclaimed building and, from the 35th floor, to view some of the impressive physical development of Hong Kong, much of which had taken place since their previous visit.

Later in the first day, the Queen and Prince Philip visited the Hong Kong Polytechnic. In 1975, when they visited the two universities, Hong Kong's first polytechnic was only one year old. Now a second polytechnic has been established, and a third university is being planned. Their visit to the Hong Kong Polytechnic highlighted the important contribution which this area of education makes to Hong Kong's industrial, commercial and manufacturing development.

In contrast to the earlier formalities, the Youth Spectacular at the Hong Kong Coliseum in the evening, was a triumph of spontaneity and high spirits. 6,400 young performers played, sang, performed acrobatics, ballet and traditional dance in a breathtaking hour-long performance which ended with a parade of children in national dress from Hong Kong's numerous international communities and all Hong Kong's leading pop-stars leading a rousing finale. The Royal visitors were delighted and touched by the warm welcome given them by the youth of Hong Kong, and by the evident enjoyment and enthusiasm of the peformers. Majesty was good enough to send a photogravure with the suggestion that it be hung in the foyer of the Coliseum to remind future audiences of the occasion.

The Royal couple received a warm welcome from large crowds when they walked through a public housing estate and visited a family in their Home Ownership flat, a new feature of Hong Kong's public housing scene since the 1975 visit.
