2.
The Committee last visited Hong Kong in December 1986. Copies of their programme, and of the Chairman's subsequent letter to the Secretary of State, are at Flags
B and C.
3.
The Committee's next visit will take place in late October/early November this year and will form part of their enquiry into "The future of the Brigade of Gurkhas". Their itinerary will also include visits to India and Nepal. We do not expect the Committee to focus on this visit until June or July, when an outline programme is
expected to be drawn up before the Summer recess.
4.
We have asked PRU to advise on what subjects the
Committee are likely to raise with you. PRU understand
that the Committee see the meeting as an opportunity to
ask you how in broad terms you are preparing for your new post, and to explore with you how you see the various defence subjects you will need to address on arrival. No doubt the Committee will mention their own forthcoming
visit in this context. The other subjects which the
Committee may raise are:
(a)
internal security, including the role of British
Forces;
