Q12. There are concerns in Hong Kong that your rank may not be
high enough to facilitate direct communications with
with top
Chinese officials. How will you react to that?
Al2.
It's a slightly odd problem, if it is a problem. I hope my rank now is the rank of the Governor of Hong Kong and I certainly hope that the rank of Governor of Hong Kong
opens one or
or two doors in various places in the world.

future representative government? Do you think it is right tiem for us to have direct elections in the Legislative Council election in
1988?
A13. I think I was asked
that question in almost exactly the same words before, so forgive me if I repeat, but rather shorter, the answer, that there will be a review this year and that will be a genuine review and the object is to ascertain the opinions of the people of Hong Kong. Before that is done, I don't think it would be sensible for me to try to produce hypothetical answers from what might emerge
from the review.
Q14.
A14.
Q15.
In view of your age possibly you would be the last British Governor of Hony Kong, what sort of British heritage and links you would like to preserve in Hong Kong after 1997?
a SAR
Obviously after 1997 Hong Kong changes and becomes of the People's Republic of China. In terms of heritage, I think there is a sort of heritage round you, but the heritage of Hong Kong is very much a heritage which has been created by the people of Hong Kong themselves. That's the sort of heritage that I think will go on, and
that's the important point..
