SELECT COMMITTEE ON DEFENCE
1.
You have agreed to meet the Select Committee
Defence at the House of Commons at 1730 on Thursday, 12
March. We understand that this will be a very informal
session and no cross examination is intended. A list of
the members of the Committee is at Flag A.

The Committee last visited Hong Kong in December
Copies of their programme, and of the Chairman's
subsequent letter to the Secretary of State, are at Flags
B and C.
3.
The Committee's next visit will take place in late
October/early November this year and will form part of
their enquiry into "The future of the Brigade of Gurkhas".
Their itinerary will also include visits to India and
Nepal. We do not expect the Committee to focus on this visit until June or July, when an outline programme is
expected to be drawn up before the Summer recess.

We have asked PRU to advise on what subjects the Committee are likely to raise with you. PRU understand that the Committee see the meeting as an opportunity to No! ask you how in broad terms you are preparing for your new
post, and to explore with you how you see the various
defence subjects you will need to address on arrival. No
doubt the Committee will mention their own forthcoming
visit in this context. The other subjects which the Committee may raise are:
(a)
internal security, including the role of British
Forces;
