BACKGROUND

EXECUTION OF HONG KONG RESIDENT IN CHINA

Radio reports on the morning of 18 February stated

that two people, a Thai citizen and a Hong Kong resident, had been executed by shooting following

conviction on drug smuggling charges.

We were aware from press reports that two Hong Kong residents, Tai Man-Huen (aged 35) and Yu Sek-Foon (32)

were sentenced to death on 7 January in Kunming

following conviction on charges of smuggling heroin worth HK$14.5m (£1.4m) into China in 1986. It was

expected that the executions would take place within a

month or so, and would be public.

Hong Kong have told us by telephone that the news

of the executions has been calmly received there.
