RESIGNATION OF HU YAOBANG
An internal Chinese matter. Not appropriate for me
to comment.
PRC commitment to implementation of Joint Declaration on future of Hong Kong amply demonstrated by its actions and statements since Declaration signed in 1984. See no reason why recent changes should affect
this.
Welcome statement by Chinese Prime Minister, Zhao Ziyang [pron. Jow Zeryang], that China's internal and external policies will not be affected. Chinese Government spokesmen have emphasised policies towards Hong Kong will not be affected.
Reactions in Hong Kong have in general been calm and measured. Recognition that what matters for Hong Kong is implementation of Joint Declaration.
REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT
Review by HKG of further development of representative government will go ahead as planned.
No
Wrong for me to try to anticipate outcome. decisions taken in advance. A genuine and objective
review.
[Chinese objections to direct elections? ]
Direct elections will be among issues considered. Views expressed by Hong Kong people will be fully taken
into account.
