BACKGROUND

New Governor

Sir David Wilson's appointment as the next Governor

of Hong Kong was announced on 16 January He is currently undertaking a programme of briefing before taking up his duties in Hong Kong He has told the press that he will arrive in Hong Kong in early April: the exact date of his arrival (on present planning, 9 April) has

A memorial service for his predecessor, Sir Edward Youde is to be held on 17 February The Secretary of State is planning to attend.

Ministers have replied to PQ's from Mr Robert Parry

about the Governor's salary.

8,100 Vietnamese boat refugees are in Hong Kong, the second largest concentration in South East Asia Hong Kong has the region's lowest rate of resettlement, and the highest proportion of
