Dear Prime Minister,

Flo

The sudden death of our greatly respected Governor, Sir Edward Youde, is a terrible blow to Hong Kong. It was very sad indeed for all of us who make our home here. So many of us wept openly for we all loved Sir Edward for what he had done for Hong Kong. How we wish Sir Edward could have guided us a bit longer!

In your difficult deliberations for Sir Edward's successor, may I suggest, Mrs. Thatcher, that you give some consideration to appoint Sir David Akers-Jones, the Acting Governor. Sir David knows Hong Kong like the palm of his hand. He also speaks some Chinese dialects, and he knows well the China scene albeit from a slight distance. Besides his intimate knowledge of the Chinese people and Hong Kong, he has a similar personality to Sir Edward's. Sir David would do well indeed with the Chinese leaders in Beijing because he is so much like Sir Edward in temperament. What made the late Sir Edward so popular was his gentle and friendly way with people. Sir David could be another Sir Edward.

Please do, for the sake of Hong Kong and Britain, give this suggestion your kind consideration.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
