APPOINTMENT OF THE NEW GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG:

MESSAGE FROM THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT

امعة مان

1.

Madam Zhang Youyun, the Councillor at the Chinese Embassy

who deals with Hong Kong affairs, asked to call on me this afternoon to deliver a message to the Secretary of State from the Chinese Foreign Minister.

2.

Madam Zhang said that Wu wished to thank the Secretary of

State for his message giving advance information of the appointment

of the new Governor of Hong Kong. Dr Wilson was a friend whom the

Chinese side had known for many years. Wu believed that his appointment as Governor would assist continued implementation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration on the Question of Hong Kong, the

maintenance of the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong and the

further development of the friendly relations and co-operation

existing between China and Britain, including in the handling of

Hong Kong affairs.

3.

I told Madam Zhang that the message would be conveyed to the

Secretary of State. She did not leave anything in writing.
