I am now able to reply to your letter of 7 November 1985, I regret that it has taken so long to examine the various options involved. We have also noted Richard Evans' views in his letter to you of 19 December 1985.
2. I entirely agree with you that it would be wrong to locate the Consulate-General in HMS Tamar, whether in the Prince of Wales' Building housing Headquarters British Forces, or in any of the other buildings in the Tamar compound, CBF has indicated that the Services would like HMG to retain this accommodation after 1997. The same view was expressed by Air Vice-Marshal Allison (the Director of Management and Support of Intelligence) when he was here at the end of February. But I remain convinced that there are overpowering arguments against HMG seeking to retain the use of HMS Tamar beyond 1997 for whatever purpose.
